Northern NSW

byron shire and tweed shire

The 2020 NSW Government Street Count revealed that Byron Shire has NSW’s second largest population of people who were sleeping rough. As a result, Byron Shire was one of the first regional area in NSW to hold an End Street Sleeping Collaboration Connections Week in 2020 , quickly followed by Tweed Shire.

Connections Week is a week to collect the stories and understand the needs of people who are sleeping rough in our community.

During Connections Week, trained volunteers and community sector workers connect with people sleeping rough to conduct surveys and seek to understand their housing and health needs.

From the information and personal stories collected a By Name List is created. This is a real-time database of all people who are sleeping rough in our community.

This information helps the individuals sleeping rough when it is used by local community services to better coordinate and integrate support services. In the bigger picture, data patterns and trends inform policy innovation and systems change so the Collaboration can work toward ending rough sleeping.
